Lia Nici says visa rules shouldn’t be waived for Ukrainians due to ‘security concerns’
Grimsby MP Lia Nici is facing more criticism from her constituents after suggesting that the UK’s failure to take in more refugees is justified.
Appearing on BBC Politics North yesterday, the local MP was questioned on multiple current topics including government action on taking in refugees from Ukraine.
Lia Nici defended the government and the action they have taken so far, stating that the home office has had a high number of applicants through the home for refugees scheme.
She encouraged the public to either sponsor those displaced through charities or to donate money to those taking shelter in neighbouring countries rather than finding those who need homes through social media.
When asked if visa rules should be waived, the Grimsby MP argued against dropping visa rules due to “security concerns”.
She suggested that waiving visa rules could allow Russian agents to enter the country.
Ms Nici said: “The reality is that we have experienced in peacetime Russian agents coming over here and trying to kill people.
“We are high risk and we do know that the majority and many, many people are innocent trying to come over but we do need to make sure we know who’s coming over here.
“We are a prime target for security risks so we need to be making those checks.”
Many of Lia’s constituents were outraged by her response on the programme, with one writing: “I’m shocked to hear this Grimsby MP justifying visa requirements for refugees from Ukraine on the grounds of the ‘history of Russian agents coming here and killing people’ ! Seriously bad.”
Another wrote: “I can’t bear to watch her at all now. What have Grimsby voted for?”
Others claimed to be ashamed of the MP, stating that she is “an utter embarrassment”.
