Outrage as local war memorials targeted by vandals

War memorials near Grimsby have recently been targeted by vandals, leaving local residents furious.

The memorials, located in Keelby and Laceby, depict the Tommy soldiers who fought in the First and Second World Wars.

The Tommy’s are a part of the Royal British Legion Industries and play a huge role in honouring and remembering those who gave their lives in service of their country.

In the attacks, the Tommy in Laceby had a dog poo bag hanging from it whilst the memorial in Keelby had a part broken in two, kicked and scratched.

Sharing the images of the Keelby Tommy, local community group Brightening Keelby wrote: “I wasn’t going to post this about our Tommy on Riby Road but after the Laceby village poo bag post I thought you all should know.

“I’m a very positive person and so are our members but we are disgusted by this vandalism

“The first damage was reported by 4 members of the public on 15th February. Then 22nd February having had a cage thrown at it and the last picture today shows more of the gun missing. The police are aware. Also, members of the public have reported 2 boys kicking the Pelham crescent planter and at least 5 planters have gone altogether. Please can people refrain from this vandalism?

“We are trying really hard to Brighten the village and these setbacks slow our progress and cost money we are raising for other areas of the village If you see any vandalism please ring the police or report it to the community police officer Dawn Cowling.”

Another local called the attack “unforgivable”, stating: “Absolutely outrageous and unforgivable. I think it’s probably a good idea to put the Tommy’s away until they are required on duty again.”
