Grimsby are back to winning ways

Grimsby were looking to bounce back after a disappointing away defeat early in the week.

Town made numerous changes to their starting lineup; Sean Scannell made his first league start of the season alongside new signing Dieseruvwe.

The hosts started the match well after Wakefield forced Max Crocombe into action during the first minute.

The Mariners came to Yeovil with something to prove, taking just 9 minutes to bag the opening goal.

Scannell cut inside after displaying delicious footwork before pulling the trigger with his left foot and beating the Yeovil keeper.

John McAtee thought he won Grimsby a penalty after being brought down on the edge of the box, but the appeals were waved away.

Despite being 1-0 down, Yeovil Town looked the dominate side, creating a plethora of attacking chances but lacked clinical edge.

Olufela Olomola almost leveled his side but was unable to prevent his header from rising over the bar.

The Mariners finally managed to break the hosts’ pressure and retain possession, Efete almost doubled Grimsby’s lead, but could only send his effort wide.

Moments later, Scannell provided Clifton with a beautifully timed through-ball, but the midfielders effort was collected comfortably by Grant Smith.

Yeovil Town were inches away from equalising after Barclay’s header thumped the bar, a warning sign for the Mariners.

The first half concluded with Town in front, the hosts would have been disappointed not to have converted one or two chances.

Grimsby started the second 45 with promise, Harry Clifton’s strike forced an early save from Smith, the resulting rebound cleared by Staunton.

The Mariners shortly found themselves 2-0 up just before the 60th minute.

Emmanuel Dieseruvwe doubled Grimsby’s lead, an impeccable delivery from a corner found the forward in space, before volleying home his second goal in three appearances.

Yeovil emulated their first half performance, creating a library of goalscoring opportunities but failed to convert.

Lo-Everton caused problems for the Mariners after a loose ball almost fell to his feet, he later combined with Olomola but Waterfall nullified the attack to retain the two-goal cushion.

Luke Waterfall was involved again, this time clearing the ball off the line after a Barnett effort.

The clash ended 2-0, Grimsby taking all three points back home and up to 7th in the league.
