Council issues statement as Ukraine crisis escalates

North East Lincolnshire Council has issued a statement in response to the ongoing and rapidly escalating situation in Ukraine.

Leader of the council, Councillor Philip Jackson, confirmed that the authority is on stand-by to assist “in any way it could.”

According to Mr Jackson, council officers are observing steps taken in previous international crises’ as a guideline for what steps should be taken.

He said: “What we are witnessing in Ukraine is incomprehensible and I am sure I speak for the whole of North East Lincolnshire when I say how the dreadful plight of the country’s people is in our thoughts, hopes and prayers.

“Of course, we will do all we can and in the coming days the picture will become clearer on what that help and support will look like.”

He added that action would be taken in line with government guidelines.

Private landlords in North East Lincolnshire have been contacted to see if they could make properties available to those seeking sanctuary.

A number of local organisations and individuals have already taken it upon themselves to offer financial, emotional and physical support to those affected by the crisis.

The statement follows the devastating milestone that at least one million people have fled Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion.

Jamey Keaten of Time magazine called the event an “an exodus without precedent in this century.”

The figure accounts for more than 2% of Ukraine’s entire population.

The UN refugee agency has warned that the outflow is far from finished.

Up to 4 million people are expected to eventually leave Ukraine as a result of the crisis with many expected to arrive on British soil.

Updates to follow.
