Southend fixture rescheduled after late postponement
A fixture between Southend United and Grimsby Town has been rescheduled after it was cancelled last week.
Fans were left frustrated after travelling over 200 miles to Southend, only to have the match cancelled just hours before the match was set to begin.
The match between Southend United was set to take place on Friday 18 February, but was postponed after Storm Eunice caused ‘extensive damage’ to the Roots Hall stadium.
Despite red weather warnings for much of England, social media posts from the hosts suggested the match would go ahead.
Grimsby published multiple statements to their platforms throughout the day, keeping fans in the loop whilst Southend failed to emulate Town’s transparency.
The match was eventually axed around 16:30.
The travelling fans expressed their anger in response to confirmation that the game had been postponed so close to kick-off.
One Twitter user blamed Southend United’s communication, saying: “we could have told you hours ago but you let our fans travel anyway”
Another user voiced their displeasure with the hosts: “I feel sorry for the fans who travelled”
“Yet again, the fans come last” they added.
The game has now been re-scheduled for Tuesday 8th March.
