Seal rescued from local river released back into the Humber

A lone seal which was rescued from a local river has been released back into the Humber after being treated by vets.

Over the weekend British Divers Marine Rescue were alerted by members of the public about a lone seal stranded in the River Ancholme in Brigg.

Two local BDMLR volunteers spent the week monitoring it due to its unusual location.

On Wednesday the rescuers began to receive reports that the seal had a fishing lure hooked on its nose and mouth area.

After many hours of watching and waiting the two volunteers managed to catch the seal while hauled out on the riverbank.

Initial assessments on scene found that they could not remove the hook safely so the decision was made to transfer the seal to the out of hours vet team at Rase Vets.

Thankfully they managed to remove the hook and lure and after an x-ray to check for any more hooks the seal was deemed fit for release.

Due to the weather and tide times the seal, named Simon by a young girl who watched the rescue, was transferred over the Humber and released successfully at Hessle Foreshore.

British Divers Marine Rescue shared the update to Facebook: “Thank you to the local residents of Brigg for keeping us updated on ‘Simon’

“He was successfully released in the Humber late last night after veterinary treatment.”
