Frustrating draw as Town waste opportunities

Frustrating draw as Town waste opportunities

Grimsby were back in action after their inspiring 2-1 comeback at Notts County last Saturday.

The Mariners hosted league strugglers King’s Lynn who currently sit 22nd.

It was a special occasion for Harry Clifton who marked his 150th appearance for Town.

The Mariners started with confidence, motivated by their win at the weekend.

King’s Lynn kicked off the match, but it was Town who enjoyed most of the possession.

Grimsby retained the ball well in the first 10 minutes, Efete, Amos and McAtee showcasing their brilliance early on but unable to punish the opposition.

King’s Lynn was happy to sit back, prioritising their defensive structure as Town tried to penetrate their tight setup.

Clifton had the best opportunity after a fantastic ball over the top of the King’s Lynn defenders found the forward in space, drawing a crucial save from goalkeeper Paul Jones.

The Mariners began to increase their intensity in a mission to draw first blood, McAtee looked lively and displayed delicate skills before forcing another save from keeper Jones.

Overall, the visitors would be happy with how they started the first half.

King’s Lynn managed to nullify Towns attacking play and accumulated one or two half chances themselves.

Grimsby continued to apply pressure early in the second half, Aston Villa’s Raikhy testing the keeper in the first 30 seconds.

Sousa was next in line to test the keeper, his shot caught Jones off guard but failed to hit the target.

Blundell Park erupted with deafening penalty claims after a hand ball was waved away, Town fans chanted “you don’t know what you’re doing” in response.

As the match progressed, Paul Hurst made two substitutions, replacing captain Coke and Taylor for Scannell and Abrahams.

King’s Lynn did have some chances later in the second half but like Town, lacked quality in the box.

Despite the Mariners applying more pressure in the second half, their accuracy in the final third let them down.

The match ended 0-0, 22nd King’s Lynn taking a point home with them.

Grimsby had a multitude of opportunities leaving them frustrate not to have scored.
