Poundland prepares to move into former New Look unit

Grimsby’s Poundland store is set to relocate to the former New Look unit inside Freshney Place following the store’s closure last.

The former New Look store is now completely vacant after workmen were seen clearing it out.

New Look confirmed the closure in January after rumours began to circulate.

It was initially thought that New Look would be moving to a different site within Freshney Place, but staff later announced that the store would in fact be closing altogether.

The shop officially closed for good on Sunday the 30th of January.

A spokesperson for the company has stated that the landlord decided to end the lease early in turn forcing the closure.

A statement issued by New Look said: “Regrettably the New Look store in Freshney Place will be closing in January after the landlord decided to exit the lease early.

“Whilst it was therefore not our decision to close the store, we are focusing on supporting our store colleagues and where possible finding alternative roles for them within the business.”

Now, Poundland are preparing to take over the unit.

The store recently closed off its Victoria Street entrance as staff begin to condense stock ahead of the move.

A statement issued by Poundland said: “Grimsby town centre is going through a major regeneration.

“As part of that, we’re preparing to move from our existing store in Victoria Street to a new unit in Freshney Place in the spring.

“Our new store will offer customers the amazing value they’ve come to expect and more.

“It will have an extended PEP&CO clothing and homeware range and will join the growing number of Poundland stores to offer chilled and frozen food.

“We’ll be announcing more details in the coming weeks.”

Updates to follow.
