By Devastating hay bale fire causes destruction in Lincolnshire
Firefighters responded to a major hay bale fire in Lincolnshire this morning which involved 30,000 bales.
Initially, six fire crews worked together to dampen down the blaze as smoke billowed high into the sky.
The hay bale fire is on the site of a former RAF bomber base on Learoyd Road in Hemswell Cliff near Gainsborough.
The RAF site closed in 1967 before it was turned into an industrial and agricultural site, the BBC reported.
The hay bale fire reportedly broke out on Wednesday 26 January.
Residents were advised to close all of their doors and windows to keep the smoke out of their homes.
At 5:32am this morning, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue released an update on social media.
A spokesperson said: “We still have 3 crews in attendance and our High Volume Pump continuing to dampen down and prevent fire spread.
“Residents are advised to close doors and windows due to smoke drift.”
Local farmer Charles Anyan claimed that the hay bales were thankfully not supposed to feed livestock, but they were due to go to a power station.
He told Farmers Weekly: “The flames were fairly massive. It was quite an impressive sight, but very sad at the same time.
“I drove past last night and it had been burning for a few hours. It was still smoking this morning and will be for a few days.
“There must be a million bales there; they stretch as far as the eye can see. It was fairly catastrophic, but it could have been a lot worse.”
Lincolnshire Police are currently investigating what caused the devastating hay bale fire.
