By North Lincolnshire Council urges locals to recycle electricals
North Lincolnshire Council is urging local residents to recycle their old electricals after a large amount of waste was generated over the Christmas period.
According to North Lincolnshire Council, 3.7 million people bought a new smart watch for Christmas last year.
Almost 40 million new electrical items were bought in the UK in December alone.
As a result, households across the UK abandoned 4.2 million electrical items over Christmas, letsrecycle reported.
Another 2.2 million items were hoarded and a further two million were thrown away.
The items total a staggering £136 million.
For ‘Give-Back January’, North Lincolnshire Council is urging the public to donate their working devices or recycle them in their kerbside boxes.
Recycle Your Electronics is a UK-wide campaign which makes it easier for people to reuse and recycle their unwanted electricals.
The campaign is led by Material Focus and funded by WEEE, the waste electrical and electronic equipment compliance fee.
This year’s ‘Give-Back January’ campaign is reportedly fronted by television presenter Konnie Huq and lifestyle writer Nicola Lewis.
According to letsrecycle, Konnie Huq said: “The Recycle Your Electricals Give-Back January campaign is so important – it shows us that there is value in our waste electricals.
“There are so many people that would really appreciate something being donated to them, and if something is really broken then always recycle it.”
