By Investment could breathe life into Regal cinema
The Regal Cinema on Freeman Street is set to undergo a major refurbishment to restore it to its former glory.
The venue, which has the capacity to house almost 2000 people, was a bustling community hub when it first opened in 1937.
Unfortunately the cinema was forced to closed due to decreasing audiences and vandals.
It has since been leased as of 2018 and the stalls side of the building is now home to a mix of high octane fun, this includes Airsoft, Nerf, Laser tag and an arcade area kitted out with vintage and popular games from various decades.
But now developer Andy Jervis has taken responsibility for the building after moving from his King Edward street premises.
While the cinema section of the building remains vacant at present, Mr Jervis has plans for a grand renovation project.
He says there is ample opportunity for development and hopes to refurbish the location into a live music venue, taking advantage of it’s existing layout.
According to Mr Jervis, the classic layout and design would serve as an excellent music venue for local artists, while still retaining it’s classic history.
He added that he hopes the plans would also help to restore a sense of pride in a local listed landmark, whilst also creating something new for the community to get involved with.
The renovation will be self funded, with cost estimates reaching around £75,000.
