By Works to expand Cleethorpes Cemetery have begun despite objections
Construction works have started on a field in Cleethorpes as part of plans to extend Cleethorpes cemetery.
The cemetery, which first opened in 1877, is to be extended into a neighbouring field to increase the space at the site for future burials.
The works will include the construction of a new paved road and drainage system to allow funeral vehicles to access the site, as well as improving the boundary hedges where required.
Many residents of Penshurst Road and Sandringham Road were adamantly opposed to this extension, claiming it would devalue their homes and would be unpleasant for local school children to see, as well as disrespectful to those mourning in the cemetery.
One resident labelled the plans ‘ridiculous’ saying: “my son personally uses this field to play football etc with friends, it makes for a useful cut through to school for many too…those mourning the loss of a loved one would not want to hear children playing meters away.”
Another said: “my partner and I were very disappointed to receive notice of these plans, and we strongly object to them.”
The works began on Monday 10 January and are expected to take about six weeks to complete.
Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “Sadly we will always need space to bury our loved ones.
“This extension really is necessary to provide enough space for future burials. We have worked closely with the neighbouring school and written to nearby residents to explain when the works will take place, and I’d like to take this opportunity to apologise for any disruption caused by the works taking place.”
Access between Penshurst Road and Trinity Road will also be closed permanently following the works.
Residents will still be able to access to the cemetery via Trinity Road, Curzon Avenue or Bentley Street.
