By New plans shared by Grimsby West developers for ‘sustainable’ living
The developers behind the ambitious and controversial Grimsby West scheme have shared their vision for a ‘vibrant new community.’
Launching their new website, the developers have shared their vision in which families ‘can live sustainable, healthy and happy lives for many generations to come.’
The site also asks local residents to share their own thoughts on the development.
The scheme has previously been met with strong resistance from locals, leading to the creation of the ‘Save the Freshney Valley’ group.
Last year the group lead a protest outside of the town hall in Grimsby, chanting ‘say no to Grimsby West’ at councillors as they entered the building.
Back in October, the £50 million bid for the Grimsby West relief road and housing development submitted by North East Lincolnshire Council was rejected by the Government.
The majority of the funding was set to be spent on the planning and development of a new 2.5-mile link road to the west of Grimsby, providing an alternative route from the south to the major employment sites along the Humber bank.
This would, according to NELC, “reduce congestion, journey times and vehicle emissions across the borough”.
The second aim of the funding was to open up land for a separate housing scheme along this road, with plans for up to 3,500 homes.
The developments would be created in stages over the next 20 to 30 years, with the aim to provide new homes, job opportunities and local amenities.
The plans for the road and housing scheme were first identified as development opportunities within the borough’s 2018 Local Plan – but the Government has since listed the funding for the project as unsuccessful.
Sharing their objectives to their website, the developers said: “Grimsby West is an exciting scheme for North East Lincolnshire that will create a place where people want to live and thrive – a place everyone can be proud of.
“The master plan will create a vibrant new community rooted in the local area’s characterful heritage and landscape, where people can live sustainable, healthy and happy lives for many generations to come.”
Developers added that they have created nine ‘development objectives’ to help shape the new community. These include design, population, climate change, economy, housing, social and health inequalities, ecology and natural environment, transport and local facilities.
The proposed site is located to the west of the existing urban edge of Grimsby, adjacent to the residential communities of Wybers Wood and Laceby Acres. The site is bordered by Great Coates to the north and Laceby Road to the south.
