Boreham Wood game postponed after Grimsby Covid outbreak
The Mariners’ next league game against Boreham Wood has been postponed after an “escalating” number of Covid cases in the squad.
Saturday’s defeat to Stockport County was put into doubt when Paul Hurst revealed that the squad had received a number of cases on Thursday.
More players testes positive in the following days and Grimsby were left with just three outfield players on the bench for the FA Trophy tie.
A club statement read: “Grimsby Town Football Club can confirm that due to an escalating number of positive COVID19 cases within the First Team, Tuesday’s home fixture vs. Boreham Wood has been postponed.
“Despite our best efforts and daily testing, the Mariners have had a number of First Team players return positive PCR tests.
“This follows a continuous regular rise in national infection numbers seen across the country.
“The club are currently in dialogue with Public Health England and the National League and will relay any information received to our supporters at the earliest opportunity.
“Those supporters who hold tickets for the fixture can retain them for the rearranged date or can return their tickets to the Blundell Park ticket office for a full refund.
“Information relating to a new date for the fixture will be announced in due course.
“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and wish you all a very Merry Christmas.”
The original game against Boreham Wood was postponed after Storm Arwen caused damage to the Blundell Park roof, and now the rearranged fixture has too been postponed.
It is not clear exactly what the National League deems worthy of postponing a game, however it is likely that it follows the EFL’s guideline of 14 outfield players and one goalkeeper available.
Saturday’s Grimsby squad featured just 13 outfield players, with two goalkeepers, and Lenell John-Lewis’ red card has decreased that number even further.
Grimsby’s next game is now an away game at Halifax Town on Boxing Day, however that too is in doubt because of the club’s Covid situation.
