British Steel Actavo strike enters 11th week

Scaffolders picketing outside British Steel in Scunthorpe have now entered their eleventh week of strike action.

More than 60 scaffolders took to industrial action on October 4 over pay disputes with their employer Actavo.

Unite the Union claims that the workers at British Steel are paid 15% below the nationally-agreed rate by contractor Actavo and that action will continue until the company complies with the striker’s demands.

According to Unite the scaffolders maintain more than 500 structures at the British Steel site.

On Tuesday (14 December) scaffolders that were picketing on site caused major road delays by blocking the entrance to the new roundabout onto the Steelworks, causing blockages in both directions.

Unite said Actavo was paying the scaffolders between 10-15% below the wage figure in the National Agreement for the Engineering Construction Industry.

The union claimed the Irish-based company had “refused to enter into further negotiations to seek a resolution of the dispute”.

An online petition supporting the striking workers has so far received more than 14,000 signatures.

Almost 3,000 people work at the site in Scunthorpe, which was taken over in a £50m deal by Chinese steelmaker Jingye Group in March last year.
