Humberside Police issue warning for parents this Christmas

Humberside Police have called for parents to check all of the privacy and security settings for any presents that will allow their children to go online.

They have told parents to make sure that any mobile phone or games console has been set up with security in-mind to make sure that your children receive no unwanted contact from strangers.

Detective Sergeant Patrick Morfitt from the force’s Police Online Investigation Team (POLIT) said:

“If you are buying a device for your children this year, make sure it is age appropriate and has the parental controls set up to protect them from unwanted online contact.

“We don’t want to scare parents and carers about the safety of their children, we simply want to make sure they talk to their children about staying safe online.

“As a parent myself I know how easy it is to get their devices made secure and so at Christmas I would just ask other parents to take the time to check the parental controls and make sure everyone has a safe and happy Christmas.”

Many devices have parental controls which block many unsafe channels and material, that can be easily turned on with the press of a button.

You can turn on parental controls, and turn on parental locks with some devices, by going to the settings tab and selecting security, there you should find parental controls allowing you to filter the content your child will have access to.

There are detailed guides online if you are still unsure about anything, and you can find out more at the following websites: Get Safe Online, Think You Know and NSPCC.
