New plans proposed for historic Empire building in Cleethorpes

Plans have been submitted to North East Lincolnshire Council to transform the historic Empire building in Cleethorpes.

Based on Alexandra Road in Cleethorpes, the Empire opened back in 1896 as a theatre before being made into a cinema.

The building, which was listed as grade two in 1988, is currently used as an amusement arcade and laser quest.

Plans submitted to the council aim to convert the historic Empire building into a multi-function space.

Submitted by John Armitage the application plans for the partial conversion of the ground floor into a shop and creation of a multi-function space – including bar and restaurant – on the first floor.

A report supporting the refurbishment states: “The new floor will enable the majority of the existing building to be used and given a new lease of life, allowing members of the public once again to see the building and all the character it has to offer.

“The stage will also be brought back into use giving the opportunity to host shows and events once more.”

The proposal also mentions the refurbishment of the second floor into a three-bedroom residential flat.

The plan is currently being assessed by planning and heritage officers at North East Lincolnshire Council with a decision not expected until the New Year.

However, the proposed plans have been met with resistance, with one resident stating: “Parking for residents in Dolphin Street is already a huge issue. Retail, bar-restaurant will compound the issue as people always want to park as near as possible and as cheap as possible.

“Noise from current bars, restaurants and takeaways is already a major problem especially burning
the summer.

“Rubbish in Dolphin Street from overflowing commercial bins is a problem.”
