Scunthorpe care home rated ‘inadequate’ in recent inspection

Cherry Tree House on Collum Avenue has been given an ‘overall inadequate’ rating in their latest inspection from the Care Quality Commission.

The care home has been told to make urgent improvements after inspectors found that overworked staff had difficulty keeping the residents safe.

The inspection was triggered by concerns about staffing levels, shortfalls in caring and failure to wear proper PPE.

In the report, one staff member admitted to the CQC: “I left the home in tears after my shift recently; some of the new residents need so much support and we don’t have time to do everything.”

Cherry Tree House, which looks after people over the age of 65, had 25 residents at the time of the inspection.

It had previously had issues with infection control, staffing and quality management, and inspectors said these hadn’t been improved upon.

Staff members told inspectors that they couldn’t cope with the number of residents and their needs, and regularly went their whole shifts without breaks.

A number of safety concerns were raised in the home such as patients not receiving medication, Covid restrictions and guidelines not being followed and inadequate use of PPE.

The CQC said in their report: “The overall rating for this service is ‘inadequate’ and the service is therefore in ‘special measures.’ This means we will keep the service under review and, if we do not propose to cancel the provider’s registration, we will re-inspect within 6 months to check for significant improvements.”

“If the provider has not made enough improvement within this timeframe. And there is still a rating of
inadequate for any key question or overall rating, we will take action in line with our enforcement
procedures. This will mean we will begin the process of preventing the provider from operating this service.”
