Firefighters ‘attacked’ following series of arson incidents

Humberside Fire and Rescue personnel have been attacked and have had their equipment destroyed during recent call outs.

Service figures have showed that there were 31 attacks on firefighters from the start of the year up until the end of October.

This has broken the buck of the trend of declining incidents over the past two years.

General manager Simon Donnachie told BBC Radio Humberside, “it can become quite intimidating for fire fighters.

“We have been dealing with this for several years.”

Local youths have stolen wheelie bins and set them ablaze, attacking rescue service personnel whilst they where trying to put them out.

Many of these incidents involve firefighters asking for backup from fellow service people or the police, which is potentially taking them away from serious fires.

A bus shelter was destroyed in Hull on Halloween night and the responding personnel had their hose cut and were attacked with rocks, bricks, glass bottles and other projectiles.

The firefighters have also been the subject of verbal abuse.

Footage posted on social media showed a bus stop on Gower Road in Hull ablaze with the flames spreading towards houses.

These are the remains of the bus shelter following the arson attack.

Councillor Mark Ieronimo told the Local Democracy Reporting Service, “People cannot continue to run roughshod in our community.

“It is unfair to residents who just want to get on with their lives.”

These incidents have caused concern in the area as it could prevent serious incidents being dealt with in a timely manner across the region.

There is particular concern with these attacks becoming more regular just before Bonfire night.

People will have to be very careful with bonfires and fireworks on Friday night if the services are being stretched because of these incidents.
