Grimsby school exclusions hit record low
A new report has found that just 19 pupils were permanently excluded from secondary schools in Grimsby and Cleethorpes in the 2020-21 academic year.
The report also found that there were no exclusions from primary schools at all.
The total of 19 pupils – 13 boys and six girls – is the lowest number in five years.
Cleethorpes Academy were the biggest contributors to this, excluding six pupils in total.
John Whitgift Academy excluded four pupils, while Tolbar and Ormiston Maritime Academy sent home three pupils each.
Havelok Academy, Healing School and Humberston Academy sent home just one pupil each in the whole academic year.
It is suspected that lockdown does play a big part in these figures however, given that pupils could not attend school for large parts of the academic year.
Schools have also been hit hard by coronavirus, with students being sent home to isolate if they test positive or have close contact with someone who does.
The Yorkshire and Humber was the only region to see an increase in attendance in the Autumn 2020 term, but still reached a low of 78.8 per cent in November.
In July, the Department for Education estimated that 14.3 per cent of pupils were isolating due to a Coronavirus.
Case numbers have remained high in the age group, leading to children continuing to miss school because of the pandemic.
Between 11 October and 25 October there were 1107 new cases, with just over half of those coming from schoolchildren.
481 under 20’s tested positive in this two-week period, the majority of which were secondary school pupils, according the North East Lincolnshire Council’s epidemiology report.
