Grimsby go four points clear at the top
The Mariners have gone four points clear at the top of the National League table after a 2-0 win over Yeovil.
Goals from Lenell John-Lewis and John McAtee ensured that Town took all three points in a game of few chances.
The deadlock was broken after twenty minutes when Will Bapaga burst into the box from the right side and was hauled down by the Yeovil goalkeeper Grant Smith.
John-Lewis made no mistake from the slot, putting it in the bottom corner and silencing fans who had booed when he stepped up.
The Mariners were disappointing in the first half and did not create many chances with the final ball often going astray.
The second half started brighter with a thunderous Harry Clifton strike being expertly saved as Town pushed for a second.
Yeovil grew into the game and put Paul Hurst’s men under pressure towards the latter stages of the game, with James McKeown stopping a late free kick.
John-Lewis missed the chance to double his tally and put the game beyond all doubt as he didn’t connect well with a squared McAtee ball, sending the ball wide from an open goal.
Yeovil failed to capitalise on a few mistakes from the Mariners and they were punished late on when McAtee sealed the win with a near post strike.
Chesterfield’s win over Boreham Wood sees Town extend their lead at the top of the table to four points.
Yeovil drop down to 15th and are just three points outside the relegation places.
An away trip to 16th-placed Wealdstone on Tuesday night is up next for Grimsby as they look for their sixth consecutive win in all competitions.
It is expected that Ryan Taylor and Michee Efete will remain unavailable for that game after the club confirmed that some first team players had tested positive for Coronavirus.
