Scunthorpe MP responds to British Steel eco-friendly plan

Scunthorpe MP, Holly Mumby-Croft, has issued a response following British Steel’s new Low-Carbon Roadmap with net-zero pledge.

The company has pledged to invest in a range of technologies to deliver net-zero steel by 2050, and significantly reduce its CO2 intensity by 2030 and 2035.

Its roadmap will see the business adopt a science-based target in order to validate its reductions in line with UK commitments to the Paris Agreement.

To help achieve its net-zero targets, British Steel will use a range of techniques and innovations including:

  • Assessing and adopting several technology options such as Carbon Capture and Storage, hydrogen, increasing scrap utilisation and Electric Arc Furnace steelmaking
  • Steel product innovation to promote the material benefits to end users, for example through light weighting and life extension
  • Supporting recycling and reuse, for instance using increased levels of scrap in its steelmaking process and encouraging re-use of steel products at the end of life, where appropriate
  • Deploying circular economy and material efficiency methodologies

Speaking about the Roadmap, Scunthorpe MP Holly Mumby-Croft said: “As the granddaughter of a steelworker, I’ve always been very proud of our longstanding steelmaking heritage. I know that residents will welcome British Steel’s long-term plans to invest in our area and produce steel in Scunthorpe.

“I work closely with British Steel, one of our largest local employers, and I have also campaigned with the wider steel industry in my time as Scunthorpe’s MP. I know that continued investment and modernisation will help to ensure we can keep on producing the best steel in the world and help secure local jobs.

“I have spoken to British Steel this morning (7 October) about their forward-looking plan. I am pleased to see them taking action to secure the future of the business and thousands of long-term, well-paying jobs in our area.

“Residents will remember the Government’s decision to legislate to protect our Steel industry earlier this year. This government has proven itself to be an ally of steel and I will continue to work with them and our steel industry to deliver a strong, competitive environment for steelmaking in the UK.”
