New dog hydrotherapy centre could be coming to Grimsby

A brand-new hydrotherapy centre for dogs could be coming to Grimsby, according to a recent planning application.

Set to be established in the building used as accommodation for staff of Abbey Veterinary Centre at 32 Bargate, the centre will include a dog hydrotherapy pool room along with a treadmill room, both on the ground floor.

The planning application states: “Abbey Veterinary Centre is a well established group of Veterinary practices with their main practice located on the corner of Bargate and Augusta Street which specialises in the care and treatment of small animals.

“The proposal is to expand the facilities at their Grimsby practice to create a dog hydrotherapy centre by utilising the space within their adjacent staff accommodation building.

“The adjacent staff accommodation building is located at 32 Bargate and is a two storey semi-detached residential dwelling. It is used exclusively to provide staff accommodation for staff working at Abbey Veterinary Centre.

“Due to the size of building, the internal layout can be rearranged to create space at ground floor level for the dog hydrotherapy centre whilst retaining the remainder of the ground floor and first floor as staff accommodation.”

There is currently one other dog hydrotherapy practice in Grimsby – Healing Waters on Ladysmith Road, which was established in 2016.

Hydrotherapy is an increasingly common treatment for dogs suffering with conditions including Hip Dysplasia, Elbow Dysplasia, Spondylosis and Osteoarthritis.

It can also be used as a weight loss aid for dogs, as well as improving muscle tone and mass before a dog undergoes an operation.

The planning application continues: “The proposal is to change the use of part of the building to form a Dog Hydrotherapy Centre whilst retaining the remainder of the building for residential use.

“There will be no alterations to the external appearance of the building and its style, character and setting within the conservation area will remain unchanged.”

The public are invited to submit their comments and views on the proposal, and can do so by following the instructions here.
