Grimsby to remember Austin Mitchell in memorial service
A Civic Memorial Service is to be held in memory of Austin Mitchell, who passed away last month.
Mr Mitchell was elected as the Labour MP for the Great Grimsby constituency in 1977. He held the seat until he stood down in 2015.
He is understood to have died at Leeds General Infirmary on Wednesday 18 August at the age of 86.
His funeral took place in Bradford, West Yorkshire, last week.
Speaking before the service at Saltaire United Reformed Church in Bradford, Revd Canon Michael Hunter said Mr Mitchell had left a “great legacy”.
He said: “[His legacy was] community is what matters, people matter, far more than parties.
“He loved people. And he loved the people of Grimsby especially.”
Now, he will also be remembered at Grimsby Minster for almost 20 years of service to the town.
The service will be held at 12 noon on 20 September 2021.
Due to current restrictions, there will be a limit on the numbers able to access the service. Local businesses and the public will be able to attend by registration only.
Due to the ongoing situation regarding coronavirus, guests will be requested to wear face coverings as they enter the Minster.
These will be able to be removed on seating and the doors will remain open during the service for airflow.
Anyone wishing to attend the service should contact North East Lincolnshire Council via civic.office@nelincs.gov.uk.
