New monument to honour Kirton in Lindsey’s heritage

A beautiful new monument has been unveiled near the centre of Kirton in Lindsey by the council which celebrates the town’s agricultural heritage and its lengthy history.

The display was constructed using a £10,000 community grant from the SSE Sustainable Development Fund and donations from locals with the help of designer and creator Tony Bartlett.

The monument exhibits a potato plough that was recovered from local storage and restored as well as a sculpture of a farmer stood on a platform made of bricks.

The sculpture was created by James Sutton from Harpswell.

The plaque says ‘Chirchetone’ which is Kirton in Lindsey’s ancient name.

The installation was brought to life to represent the working people of the town and its surrounding land.

This includes those who worked hard during times of war to main the town.

The Mayor of Kirton and Lindsey, Cllr Pat Frankish, alongside local children, conducted an official unveiling of the monument on June 12 this year.

The Deputy Lord Mayor of North Lincolnshire, Cllr John Briggs, was also in attendance.

Cllr Frankish said: “Grandad’s Plough is the brainchild of Tony Bartlett, who lives close by and has been planting beautiful flowers here for some time.

“Tony came to Kirton in Lindsey Town Council with his idea which gained popular support within the town.

“The Town Council supported the project by applying for planning permission and sourcing funding to enable the commemorative sculpture to happen.

“There has been support from North Lincolnshire Council Highways department and ward members, especially Cllr Trevor Foster, funding from the SSE Fund, Kirton in Lindsey Town Council and donations from local residents.

“We say a big thank you to Tony and his wife Jean, who have led this project through lots of stages and here we are at last.”
