Emergency works to repair a sinkhole which appeared overnight on Tuesday evening in Grimsby are now complete.

Thought to be around 1m deep, the sinkhole was discovered on Bargate between the Abbey Road and Westward Ho junctions during carriageway resurfacing works.

The discovery forced North East Lincolnshire Council to close the entire northbound carriageway travelling towards Grimsby Town Centre to allow contractors to excavate the sink hole and reconstruct the sublayers of the carriageway.

Repair works are now complete and the road has reopened.

Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport, said: “I would like to pass on my thanks and appreciation to our partner, ENGIE, and the contractor for working swiftly and getting this road back open as soon as possible.

“We all appreciate the impact traffic management can have on our road network and I am pleased we were able to fix this sink hole and safeguard our infrastructure, allowing us to complete the carriageway resurfacing scheme without further impact or delay.”

An overnight road closure will remain in place as contractors completes the resurfacing scheme.

Works are expected to continue until Tuesday 31 August.

Between this time access to the junctions of Bargate with Abbey Road and Westward Ho will be limited.
