Man sentenced to five months after football violence involving 30 people
On Tuesday 14 August 2018, a group of over 30 Scunthorpe United and Doncaster Rovers fans ended up in a large-scale violent disorder in a car park following a football match.
A total of 29 years of football banning orders were handed out on Friday 14 May this year.
Seven out of the eight men found guilty of affray received suspended prison sentences ranging from 3 to 15 months.
After a long police investigation, the final defendant in the case appeared at Nottingham Crown Court last week.
Connor Akers, a 21-year-old male from Scunthorpe, has been sentenced to five months in prison and is banned from attending any football matches for the next four years.
Humberside Police’s Chief Superintendent Christine Wilson previously said: “Attending football matches should be an enjoyable time for everyone, and it’s a shame that a small number of people behave like this.
“This isn’t the behaviour of a true football supporter and I’m pleased to see the outcome.”
She continued: “Many hours of time were taken by a dedicated team of police officers and staff to achieve these results […] and I am really proud of them.
“I also want to take this opportunity to remind people that this behaviour will not be tolerated and is not acceptable.
“The actions taken by the men on this day were dangerous and foolish.”
After Akers’ sentencing, Chief Superintendent Wilson said: “This sentence is a timely reminder to the small number of people intent on causing trouble that there is no place for this type of behaviour in the modern game.
“We can and will bring those responsible for such behaviour to justice and hope to bring an end to all football related violence.
“Families and true supporters want to follow their teams without the fear of trouble and violence and as a Force, we want to continue to help keep our local football matches a safe environment for everyone.”
