Cleethorpes Coastguard called as yacht loses power and blows towards sea defence wall
Cleethorpes Coastguard were called on Friday night by a member of the public onboard a 30ft yacht which had lost power, causing the vessel to blow towards the sea defence wall near Grimsby Docks.
Shortly after 8pm, CGOC Humber received the call, with the skipper onboard reporting that the yacht’s position was around two miles west of Grimsby Docks.
A spokesperson for the Coastguard took to social media to report the incident, writing: “Our team was tasked to locate and report on the condition of the crew and the yacht.
“The vessel was not at the position as reported, we eventually located the yacht and crew just off the North Wall between Fuller Street Bridge and Grimsby docks.
“The crew were OK but the yacht was only about 15 metres from the sea defence wall and was sitting on top of submerged rocks.
“The skipper had managed to drop his anchor, however, due to the wind and tide the yacht was dragging its anchor and drifting towards Cleethorpes.”
Because the yacht was in shallow water, the team were unable to reach the boat.
As a result, the Humber Rescue Lifeboat Team were instead paged and tasked to tow the yacht into deeper water, and then into Grimsby Docks.
The spokesperson added that both members of the crew onboard the yacht were “a little bit shook up” but didn’t require any medical attention.
