Local Olympian Sam Atkin forced to drop out due to injury

The Grimsby born athlete has unfortunately dropped out of his 10,000m race due to an Achilles injury.

Atkin was picked for Team GB after having one of the fastest times for the distance in British athletics history last year.

His race began with an impressive start, sticking with main pack of runners through the first half of the race before preparing for an exciting second half.

Sadly, he was forced to limp off the track due to a painful injury with 11 laps left to go.

Despite his injury, Atkin will be welcomed back to Grimsby with cheers from all his loved ones as well as the entire town after representing Team GB at this years Olympics.

This is just the start of his career and will no doubt be back and better than every after time to recuperate from his injury.

The Ethiopian runner Barega went on to take the gold medal, leaving Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo to claim silver and bronze respectively.
