Paint the Town Proud project kicks off to celebrate Grimsby’s world-famous heritage

The Paint the Town Proud project by Creative Start CIC as part of the Grimsby Creates programme kicked off with a bang at Freeman Street Market last weekend.

Set to take place over the next 18 months, the project will include large-scale murals on selected buildings in the town centre and indoor and outdoor community murals, along with digital augmented reality experiences and built-in soundscapes to go with them.

Working together with The Culture House, Creative Start CIC set up the programme – funded by Arts Council England – in a bid to “transform Grimsby into a vibrant town centre where heritage and creativity are enjoyed”.

Paint the Town Proud will also provide opportunities for local talent to collaborate and work alongside national artists.

Becky Darnell, the Paint the Town Proud Project Manager, said: “We’re really hoping to be able to share our pride for the town and celebrate our world famous heritage in new and exciting ways reflecting and capturing people’s memories.

“We’d like to be able to bring the past to life in a way and present it to new audiences.

“We have a lead creative team of artists who will be looking to work with other creatives and welcome anyone from the community to get involved.

“This project is very much about collaboration and we will definitely be connecting with community groups, local businesses and people who want to be involved whether that’s through creativity, telling stories, sharing memories and photographs, volunteering, or partnerships. We’re open to ideas.

“We’re just in the planning stages for first phase of the project and will be announcing lead artists and revealing plans for our first mural very soon.”
