Darren Mayne, owner of Mayne Gas, started his journey back in 2004 when the focus was primarily on domestic gas fittings only. Since then, the business has continued to grow along with its strong reputation and has now branched out to include commercial and oil services, managing factories in surrounding areas such as Scunthorpe, service contracts and also has an involvement in renewable energy.
Over the years, Mayne Gas who now have 14 full-time employees and additional contractors, was ready to make the move to a larger and permanent premises of their own.
“I saw this very run-down building on the corner of King Edward Street had become vacant and immediately saw its potential. I wanted to have additional space for my employee’s welfare, and so customers can walk-in to a reception and meet us. It’s been a work in progress, and we have completely renovated everything, but it’s been brilliant and is already making a difference”.
Prior to moving, Mayne Gas Heating was located on The Enterprise Village.
“Myself and my wife moved back to Grimsby to start a new family and with many years’ experience in the heating and plumbing industry, we set up Mayne Gas. It started really well, and after we had 6 employees, I knew we needed an office rather than working from the kitchen which is when we moved into The Enterprise Village” Darren said.
With help from E-Factor Property, the owners of The Enterprise Village, Darren and his team moved in straight away. Shortly after moving in, the business developed and with more staff Darren transferred into a larger unit in The Village.
“We were there for 8 years and it was a great location to be in. There was lots of exposure, visibility, and the quality of everything in the building was really good including the extra support received from the staff over at E-Factor Business would definitely recommend the location to any business looking for premises.
In addition to the new move, Mayne Gas has officially become the first local company to be accredited by NELC Trading Standards and joined their “Buy With Confidence” Scheme. Mayne Gas have also been enrolled into the internationally recognised quality assurance accreditations of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 and confirmed our commitment to and Health & Safety with SMAS, a Safety Schemes in Procurement (SSIP) accreditation.
“It’s amazing to have been acknowledged and be part of this scheme. This business has grown over the years, but there is so much experience and skills set behind every employee, buying with confidence is what we want all our current and potential customers to feel as we will always commit to delivering a high-quality service”.
Speaking about how the lockdown has impact his business over the past year, Darren said “Back in March, almost overnight work stopped which was a big hit for us. However, we continued to open but with reduced staff levels to provide emergency cover for customers as throughout the pandemic we were classed as essential workers. As restrictions eased, business started up again especially with lots of people doing home improvements and from there, business has continued to be really good”.
Darren used the lockdown to be productive rather than just sit back by replacing their ageing Customer Management Software Package and estimating software with a state of the art, integrated system which has streamlined the whole running of the business.
Mayne Gas hope to cement their position as number one in the area for the future, increase awareness and continue to do everything with the highest quality. “We plan on increasing the size of the workforce over the next 5 years. I want to be able to give people new opportunities which is why in time we will be taking on new apprentices”.
