Roadworks in place as further works on Corporation Bridge set to go ahead
Further work on the £4.9m Corporation Bridge refurbishment is set to take place for one week from Monday 28 June onwards.
During this week, engineers and specialist contractors will inspect the control tower and bridge deck in order to fully understand the level of work required and the current condition of the structure, as detailed design planning continues.
The bridge will also be lifted on Thursday 1 July so that engineers can conduct a full inspection of the underside and lifting mechanisms of the bridge.
A full daytime road closure will be in place from 28 June to 5 July from 9.30am to 4pm between the mini roundabout at the entrance to Alexandra Retail Park and the junction with Victoria Street.
Access for pedestrians and cyclists will generally be maintained across the bridge, but there will be short periods of times when this is not possible.
Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “The refurbishment works to Corporation Road Bridge are going to be significant and allow us to safeguard the bridge for many years to come. It is a jewel in the crown for many in Grimsby and we are committed to bringing the bridge back to its former glory.
“We continue to engage with Historic England and local heritage and historical experts as we develop the programme of works and will continue to provide engagement opportunities for residents and businesses to have their say and feed into the proposals at the relevant stages.
“As previously stated, works will take 12 to 18 months to complete, dependent on the final programme and appointing a contractor.
“In an effort to reduce disruption to businesses in the area and support residents in accessing shops over the Christmas period, we have postponed the initial summer 2021 start date to January 2022.
“This change will allow the bridge to remain open during a busy period and support businesses as they continue to recover from COVID-19 and the lockdown periods.”
The Corporation Road Bridge refurbishment is a £4.9m scheme – funded by £2.967m from the Department for Transport, £1.83m set aside by the Council and a further £170,000 from the Local Transport Fund.
