Energy is one of the most important sectors in the Humber, with the region often being referred to as the UK’s ‘Energy Estuary’.
The Humber accounts for nearly 20% of the country’s electricity generation, a third of its refined fuel and over a fifth of its natural gas imports.
Humber Zero and Zero Carbon Humber have both been successful in securing cash from the government to develop carbon capture and storage in the UK’s polluting hotspot.
A total of £34m for the decarbonisation scheme, backed by BEIS, should help greenhouse gases and save resources while also lowing exposure to chemicals and pollution.
Match-funding of £12.5 million has been received to push on with the technology required to clean up the intensive refining sector as part of Humber Zero.

Phillips 66 UK decarbonisation lead and technical manager Chris Gilbert spoke to Business Live and said “This is great news for the Humber and a further endorsement for Humber Zero.
“The Phillips 66 Humber Refinery and VPI Generation’s combined heat and power plant are ideally situated to connect to offshore carbon storage. Humber Zero is ready to be a major part of the energy transition in the region.
“The Humber region represents 40 per cent of the nation’s industrial emissions. By the late 2020s, Humber Zero will capture up to eight million tonnes per annum of CO2 for permanent storage in nearby locations.
