By Covid scammers are on doing their rounds
Sadly, these events aren’t uncommon for vulnerable people within our community to be targeted and scammed.
This report is being taken incredibly seriously and police are determined to find the person responsible.
Police issued a statement saying ‘We have had a report of someone impersonating a police officer in the Queensway area of Scunthorpe this afternoon (Wednesday 20 January), issuing ‘fines’ to vulnerable people claiming they have breached Covid regulations and asking them to transfer money on the spot.’
Official police officers will always be able to prove who they are. You can ask them for their warrant card to prove their identity and authority. Alternatively, you can ask for their collar number and contact 101 to check this person is who they say they is.
Always remain vigilant
Impersonating a police officer is a serious offence and will not be tolerated those targeting vulnerable people within our communities, especially at such a difficult time.
When a fixed penalty notice is issued in relation to a Covid breach, you will never be asked to pay it on the spot or transfer money to someone’s bank account. If you are asked this, this is a scam and you should call us.
Don’t ever give any card, address or personal details to anyone unless they prove who they say they are.
