Annual Remembrance Parade cancelled
Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Grimsby’s annual Remembrance Sunday Parade has been cancelled this year.
Services to honour war heroes are still permitted to go ahead, but restrictions will be in place, it has been announced.
Alex Baxter, Armed Forces champion of the Major Events Team North East Lincolnshire has assured the public that war heroes will be remembered this year, despite lockdown restrictions.
NHS heroes will also be honoured at a service.
Local services normally take place across Grimsby, Cleethorpes, Immingham, Scunthorpe and Louth and the surrounding villages.
Instead of this years parade, a static display representing the military might be installed.
This will be open to the public on Sunday, November 8, and could include honours for NHS workers in the battle against the coronavirus pandemic.
The display would pay homage to the sacrifices health staff have made for the wellbeing of the local community.
Alex Baxter added:
“There will be no parade but there could be a static display with everyone a measured distance apart.
“It is important a service is held but the format is outside of our control because of the risk of spreading coronavirus and what guidance there is at the time.
“We will know soon and then be able to pull the plans together and follow the lead given by The Royal British Legion, as we always do. There has to be continuity and consistency in the approach to Remembrance Services.
“You can’t have people travelling around the area.
“We have to retain at the front of our minds that this is not over and maintain our discipline and make sure everyone falls into line.
“We will win the war against the virus because we are a resilient nation and there have been battles before. You will win a few and you will lose a few.
“But we must rise to the challenge. We know who we are and we will meet the challenge.”
