Rodney Brain is sentenced to prison

Following a Thames Valley Police investigation, a man has been sentenced for manslaughter in Oxford.

After an altercation in East Oxford’s Cowley Road on Thursday, July 18 2019, Rodney Brain, aged 42, of Laurel Close, Carterton was eventually charged with the murder of Graham Collier, aged 57.

Graham Collier sustained serious head injuries during the altercation, he had left the hospital of his own accord, before being found unwell outside Posh Fish takeaway in Headington.

He was taken back to the hospital after being found by members of the public but unfortunately died on 20 July 2019.

On 24 July 2020, Rodney Brain pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter in a hearing at Oxford Crown Court.

He was sentenced to eight years and eight months’ imprisonment.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector Mike Roddy, of the Thames Valley Police Major Crime Unit, said:

“First and foremost I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Graham Collier.

“Brain’s actions were wholly unnecessary and they tragically led to the death of Graham, a man who was vulnerable and lost his life in distressing circumstances.

“This incident demonstrates the devastating consequences that a single action, such as a kick, can have and the life-changing effects it can have on everyone involved.

“As a consequence of Brain’s guilty plea, Graham’s family and friends will now not have to see this case go to trial.”
