Speaking about the unveiling of the expansion works, Dr Bruno Holthof, Chief Executive Officer at the Trust, said:
“We are delighted that the new Emergency Department expansion is now open. This has been a significant building project for the John Radcliffe Hospital which will bring real improvements in care and experience for our patients, as well as a better working environment for our staff.”
The expansion works have been deemed essential, in order to help the hospital meet the needs of a growing population in the Oxfordshire area and to ease the pressure on services caused by increased numbers of patients.
The latest Council housing-led forecasts (2017-based) predict a total population in Oxfordshire of 822,200 by 2027, a growth of 134,800 (+20%) and the improvement the services of Oxford’s Emergency Department has been embraced by all who work at the hospital and much anticipated by members of the public.
Sachin Mandalia, Clinical Lead for the Emergency Department, said:
“We know that our patients will have a much better experience when they need our help. Nobody wants to need Emergency Care but when you do, you want the care to take place in the best possible facilities. This new area will help us to deliver the standard of care that we aspire to.”

The work, which began in April 2019, includes the addition of more diagnostic equipment and improved layouts to make better use of the space and to offer more privacy and dignity for patients.
In addition, six new ambulance spaces have been created which allows faster drop-offs for patients at the front of the building, allowing ambulances to improve their turnaround time.
In addition, Oxford Hospitals Charity has funded a £826,000 dedicated CT scanner for the resuscitation department which was given to the charity as a legacy gift from a grateful former patient.
The charity has also funded comfortable and appropriate furnishings for the bereavement and relatives’ rooms as well as a series of artworks and light boxes for the area.
Douglas Graham, Chief Executive Officer of the charity, said:
“We are delighted that the charity has been able to play such an important role in this crucial development. It is particularly significant that a gift included in a Will has been able to fund such important technology that will benefit so many at their time of greatest need.”
