Council issue update on changes to Cleethorpes’ high streets

Following the publication of initial temporary plans for Cleethorpes’ high streets last week, North East Lincolnshire Council have issued updated plans in response to concerns raised by local traders.

Previously, the Council issued a statement in which it said that given the urgency of the works, local businesses have not been consulted.

It also stated that St Peter’s Avenue will become one way for vehicles from Mill Road / Cambridge Street roundabout to High Street, and Market Street will become one way for vehicles from St Peter’s Avenue to Alexandra Road.

On-street parking bays will be suspended on both, with barriers installed to allow people to walk safely within the parking bays.

It is expected that loading bays will be maintained.

Sea View Street will be pedestrianised completely, but access to New Road will be maintained.

Today, Councillor Stewart Swinburn, Cabinet member for highways said:

“It was always the case that we were going to take local views into account, but we had to publish the early plans in order to have the legal basis to put them in place on Sunday to help the high street reopen safely.

“Coming out of the lock-down situation was never going to be easy.

“We’re doing the best we can to help local businesses in Cleethorpes with these changes.

“We know that they will have more than enough to think about with social distancing measures inside their stores.

“This is about giving people enough room to circulate in the public spaces, and help provide that confidence that people can come back to the high streets safely.

“We’re going to put these measures in from Sunday night this week, and we’ll keep them under review to see if we need to tweak them in terms not only of how they work, but also in response to any further changes to government guidance in the coming weeks, particularly in relation to the reopening of pubs and clubs.”

In an amended statement, the Council says that as a result of discussions with local traders, around eight additional parallel parking spaces have been created in the Market Place to help the take-away and food outlets.

All spaces in the Market Place will have a 30 min restriction on them to help the flow of traffic.

The footpath on the Co-op side of St Peter’s Avenue will now be widened.

And, the taxi rank on Market Street will remain in operation from 6pm to 6am.

Customers who pre-order food for collection will be allowed to use the loading bay in Market Street.

The temporary layouts will be installed in Cleethorpes from 7pm on Sunday 14 June.

During this period, there may be limited access to St Peter’s Avenue and Market Street while concrete barriers are moved into place.
