Black Lives Matter to hold second demonstration in Hull

A second demonstration in support of the Black Lives Matter campaign will take place in Hull this week.

Protesters will come together is a show of support against racial inequality.

The protest will take place in Queens Gardens from 1pm on Wednesday.

The catalyst for the event was the murder of unarmed African-American man George Floyd in Minnesota last month.

But, the Black Lives Matter campaign seeks to combat the long history of worldwide racial inequality and injustice.

So far, thousands have taken to the UK’s streets in support of the movement.

And last Thursday, hundreds of people attended a Black Lives Matter demonstration in Queen Victoria Square in Hull.

The protesters were widely praised for social distancing throughout the event in which organisers handed out PPE to members of the crowd.

But, the protests have attracted controversy due to the health implications of large gatherings during the Covid-19 crisis.

Speakers addressed the crowd from the Queen Victoria monument in the centre of the square with messages of unity.

Many shared their own experiences growing up in Hull as part of an ethnic minority.

The event passed peacefully from start to finish and included a perfectly observed nine minutes silence.

Oliwia Kroczak, one of the organisers of Thurday’s protest, said:

“We want to make people aware it’s not just America, this is also happening in the UK. Institutional racism is very very real.

“It’s maybe not as obvious and overt, however, it is still a part of everyday life for people of ethnic minorities and we need to realise that it’s not just there, it’s here.

“We need to fight for it and fight for what is right.

“It’s so great to see all these people turning up and fighting for what’s right and it’s great to see people from all different races joining together and fighting together.”
