Grimsby to lose Compass FM

Grimsby is set to lose its only dedicated radio station as Compass FM goes off air, and is merged with 50 other local radio stations into Greatest Hits Radio.

It has been confirmed that Compass FM is to be rebranded and folded into a national network.

The move by owners Bauer Media will see scores of presenters axed across local stations and Compass FM.

The radio station has been broadcasting since 2001.

It is due to be axed in September.

Bauer is rebranding most of its local radio stations as ‘Greatest Hits Radio’ . They will include 49 out of 56 FM licences it only bought last year, including Compass.

At the time of the takeover, Bauer said that the move would ‘help secure the future of the acquired stations in the new audio world’.

And yet, a little over a year later Bauer has pulled the plug on most of the brands.

Graham Bryce, group managing director for the Hits Radio network brand, said:

“We are committed to ensuring the future of radio in local markets and serving the needs of our listeners and advertisers.

“However, our top priority right now will be to support those affected through this period.”

The station is operated by the Lincs FM Group, but was taken over by Bauer in February 2019.

The group includes eight stations across Yorkshire and the Midlands covering towns including Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, Wakefield, Hull, Lincoln, Skegness and Grimsby.

Compass describes itself as “the local radio station for Grimsby and North East Lincolnshire” broadcasting across Grimsby, Cleethorpes and Immingham.

Only Lincs FM, covering Lincolnshire as a whole, is expected to remain.

Compass FM is to be rebranded as Greatest Hits Radio by owner Bauer Media along with 50 other local stations.
