By Council asks locals to show their streets some love!
North East Lincolnshire Council is backing Keep Britain Tidy’s new Love Where You Live campaign, and asking locals to get involved, and show their streets some love!
Keep Britain Tidy launched the campaign after it had to call off the Great British Spring Clean because of the coronavirus outbreak.
The environmental charity says many activities its supporters usually do to protect and improve the environment aren’t possible under the coronavirus lockdown measures, but there are still plenty of ways for people to show some love for where they live.
Whether it’s keeping the area immediately outside our own front door tidy, making sure we don’t waste any food and getting creative with left-overs, even in lockdown we can all do some simple things that are good for us and good for the planet.
Dave Hall, who works in the Council’s street cleansing team, has issued a plea via Facebook for people to help keep the streets tidy.
He wrote:
“As a street cleaner I have a request for you lovely guys’n’gals’n’young uns too.
“Any chance you could just de-weed your front wall and gutter etc. It’s only a lil bit extra in ya bin or left as a neat pile. I’ve been designated a ward to attack, n oh am I doing. I like to think I’m making a difference.
“If we all do our lil bit, just think of the difference and how proud we could be of our clean town. Something we all could say, ‘I did that, I was a part of that’.
“Ten minutes work, outside, too. Keep ya distance of course. Anyway, just a thought. Keep safe.”
Ward councillors and local people have praised Dave for the difference he has made to the streets in Park Ward since the lockdown started.
The Council’s Environmental Services team are adapting their working methods in response to the social distancing rules. This has seen some street cleansing staff allocated a ward to take care of.
Members of the grounds maintenance team have been mowing grass verges and parks and have completed their first full round of weed control for the season.
Usually it takes 12 to 14 weeks to complete a full weed spraying round along 3,000 km of footpaths, but it has only take five weeks this year with the streets being much quieter than usual.
Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for Environment and Transport, said:
“North East Lincolnshire Council is among only 20 per cent of councils to be operating a full range of street scene services without substantial reductions.
“Staff are helping make this possible by adapting the way they work to stay within the social distancing guidelines.
“They’re doing a terrific job and I’m impressed to see the innovation, resourcefulness and ability to continue to deliver good public services by adapting the way they work to the coronavirus restrictions.
“We can all help by doing our bit and getting behind Keep Britain Tidy’s #LoveWhereYouLive campaign.”
