Off-duty officer assaulted in Swindon

Last night, an off-duty male Wiltshire Police officer, was approached by an unknown man, and assaulted in Swindon.

The officer was hit over the head with an unknown object in Cheney Manor Road at around 5.40pm yesterday evening.

At this stage the victim has not required hospital treatment.

Officers, supported by armed response and the police helicopter, carried out searches around the area.

Superintendent Chris Chammings said:

“Although our enquiries are at a very early stage, this appears to have been a targeted attack on a police officer.

“Thankfully, the officer involved does not appear to be seriously injured, but it is frightening to think how this could have easily had a very different outcome.

“I would urge anyone who witnessed the assault, or who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area around the time of the incident, to contact police urgently.”

Later the same evening, a teenage boy was arrested on suspicion of attempted GBH following an assault on an off-duty police officer in Swindon.

A 17-year-old boy, from Swindon, was arrested in the town later and is currently in custody at Gablecross Police Station.

The investigation into the incident is continuing.

Anyone with information should call Swindon CID on 101, quoting log 270 of 20/04.
