Hull Woman arrested after purse stolen from elderly victim

A 43-year-old woman has been arrested after stealing a purse and handbag from an elderly victim on Beverley Road, Hull.

An elderly woman reported that, shortly before 7pm on Sunday the 12th of April, she was visited by the woman at her home. The victim was told that she was being gifted an Easter egg, before her handbag and purse were stolen.

Humberside Police immediately launched an investigation, and the woman was arrested.

She has been released pending investigation while enquiries continue.

Officers have said that since the Covid-19 lockdown, they are seeing increasing numbers of reports from older residents, that they are being visited by cold-callers or door stop sellers, and that they have felt intimidated or threatened.

Many of these will have been scammers, attempting to sell products or services relating to the current crisis, and preying on the fears of vulnerable people.

Humberside Police and Age UK have stressed the importance of helping older friends and family to know and understand what to do if an unexpected caller comes to their door.

They have suggested contacting your local Neighbourhood Watch, putting up deterrent signs, or finding out if you have a nominated neighbour scheme where a neighbour can help to make sure if callers are safe.

There are many different types of doorstep scams, the official advice given by the police is always do not answer the door to anyone you don’t know or who cannot provide valid ID.

Never buy goods from door step sellers, the quality of the goods cannot be guaranteed and if there is a problem with the item you have no comeback or way to return items.

Call Humberside Police’s non-emergency 101 line if you’re not in immediate danger but want to report an incident. If you feel threatened or in danger always call 999.
