Three charged as seven front-line police officers assaulted
Over the last few days, seven front-line police officers have been assaulted in the course of their duties in five separate incidents across the Humberside force area.
Three people from Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Hull have been charged with the assaults.
One man remains in custody, and a further suspect fled the scene of the incident, and has not yet been located.
Jason Clark, 39, from Hull, has been charged with assaulting two PCSOs in Hull.
Dean Baker, 32, of Walesby Road, Scunthorpe, has been charged with a Section 39 antisocial behaviour offence and with assaulting a Special Constable in Grimsby.
Mark Webb, 45, of Eastgate, Goole, has been charged with criminal damage and two counts of assaulting two PCs in Goole.
One man was arrested on Princes Avenue, Hull, after he was reported to have made threats to members of the public in the street. The police officer that attended sustained a bite wound to his leg and the man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer. He remains in police custody.
A PCSO was assaulted when they tried to stop a man on an off road bike on Frome Road playing fields in Hull. The bike was left at the scene but the suspect fled leaving the officer with minor injuries to their face. He has not yet been located.
Chief Constable Lee Freeman of Humberside Police said:
“Thankfully, the three Police Officers, three PCSOs and Special Constable have not suffered any serious injuries, however I am incredibly dismayed that during these worrying and unprecedented times, a number of them have had people deliberately cough into their faces, which is extremely concerning for the officers and their families.
“It is totally unacceptable that they have had to endure any type of injury while only doing their job.
“Attacks like these should not happen and I want to make clear that any assault on an emergency worker is wholly unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
“Our officers and staff come to work to protect people and to keep them safe, and this will always be our priority.
“We will absolutely not accept the actions of anyone who thinks they can get away with assaulting an emergency worker, and we will always look to take action and seek prosecution for those individuals that commit such offences.”
Mark Webb and Jason Clark appeared in court yesterday. Dean Baker has been bailed, and is expected in court at a later date.
It is not thought that the men know one another, or that the incidents are connected.
