An appeal from Scunthorpe Samaritans

Scunthorpe Samaritans have issued an appeal for support from the public, in order to continue to provide valuable services to the local community.

The UK Government have confirmed that the Samaritans are key workers, and are crucial to supporting vulnerable people.

Prior to the Covid-19 outbreak, Scunthorpe Samaritans offered a face-to-face service. They say they are making every effort to ensure that volunteers are able to provide emotional support to anyone in crisis, with many carrying out shifts at the Scunthorpe branch under strict hygiene standards and social distancing measures.

The situation is being continually reviewed in alignment with government advice.

As such, the Samaritans are inundated with calls and emails from locals who are struggling to cope with the impact of the lockdown on their finances and mental health.

Due to the increasingly restrictive conditions of the Covid-19 lockdown, the Scunthorpe Samaritans have found that their volunteers are overwhelmed by the demand.

They are now appealing for donations from local residents to help ensure that volunteers are able to continue to support people struggling to cope during this complex time.

Dave Wildman, Branch Director at Scunthorpe Samaritans, said:

“For over 50 years, our branch has provided a listening eat to anyone who needs support, which has been possible through the public’s kind donations.

“Now more than ever, we need the public’s continued support. Due to the cancellation of our upcoming fundraising events and the closure of our shop, we are facing a significant loss of funding, so we are calling on North Lincolnshire residents to help us ensure that we continue to be here for anyone who needs support.

“A donation of as little as £5 will help volunteers to answer a call for help from someone struggling to cope and be there when people need support most.”
