Council given power to close businesses under lockdown rules
Under North East Lincolnshire Council, enforcement officers have been given the power to close businesses who are not confirming to lockdown rules, as the nation battles the Covid-19 crisis.
Over the course of the last two weeks, businesses and premises including pubs, beauty salons and all other non essential shops have been issued with orders to close under The Health Protection Regulations 2020.
North East Lincolnshire Council have said that businesses who are not following the guidance to stop the spread of the deadly virus Covid-19, can be issued fines or prohibition notices, but may also be named and shamed.
All non-essential businesses have been instructed to close. Those which remain open are being told to follow strict guidelines, such as limiting the number of people entering a shop and making sure that customers follow social distancing rules.
Councillor Ron Shepherd, Portfolio Holder for Safer and Stronger Communities, said:
“Everyone needs to do their bit to stop the spread of Coronavirus. Businesses that ignore the regulations and remain open are putting lives at risk. The government has announced a package of measures to support businesses through this period of disruption. Please listen to the advice – stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives.”
It has been announced that under new lockdown rules, enforcement officers for the council have now been given greater powers and will monitor compliance with these regulations, with support from the police if appropriate.
Businesses that breach the law will be subject to prohibition notices and fixed penalties.
