Grimsby man spits at Police, saying he has coronavirus

A man from Grimsby has been arrested following an incident where he spat at and bit two police officers, telling them that he has coronavirus.

Last week it was announced that anyone who coughs on key workers as a deliberate threat or attack during the Covid-19 crisis would face serious criminal charges, as the act is now considered a criminal offence.

Others have already been prosecuted.

It is alleged that Marc Olley, 36, of Pasture Street, Grimsby, angrily bit and spat at two police officers before saying that he had coronavirus and telling the officers “if your face was down here, I would spit right in your face.”

He has admitted to two offences of assaulting police in the exercise of their duties as emergency workers.

The incident occurred when officers for Humberside Police attended a property following reports of a domestic disturbance between Olley and his ex-girlfriend.

When police detained Olley, he became aggressive towards them and began making threats, after which he was dragged to the ground because of his behaviour but continued being aggressive and making threats.

He bit their fingers and spat at both officers, who did not have spit guards, claiming that he had Covid-19.

At Grimsby Magistrates Court, Marc Olley alleged to be “appalled and disgusted with himself.”

Two dock custody officers in the glass-fronted secure dock were wearing large eye goggles, face masks, blue plastic gloves and a blue plastic apron for the hearing.

Marc Olley has now been jailed for 20 weeks for his actions.
