Action against anti-social behaviour in Oxford

A statement issued this morning by Oxford City Council states that, in accordance with Oxford’s ‘Anti-Social Behaviour Policy’, they have taken action against a City Council housing tenant, who has now been evicted.

This follows a series of incidents at a property in Richardson Court, Bath Street.

The policy states that:

“Oxford City Council believes that no-one should tolerate anti-social behaviour and will use appropriate tools and powers available to local authorities to address all forms of nuisance.

As a landlord the Council has a duty to respond to ASB affecting the properties we manage. Our landlord duties and powers complement the duties and powers we have to deal with ASB by non-council tenants.”

The tenant’s anti-social behaviour is considered an “extreme” case, and is thought to stem primarily from drug based activity.

A mandatory possession order for the property was granted on 29 October 2019 at Oxford Combined Court Centre.

The court heard that anti-social behaviour, including verbal abuse of neighbours and possible drug dealing, had taken place from the property.

The City Council worked with neighbours, who were victims of the anti-social behaviour, on the case.

The tenant was evicted on Friday 17 January.

Councillor Nigel Chapman, Cabinet Member for Safer Communities and Customer Focused Services, said:

“We take incidents of anti-social behaviour and drug dealing in Oxford very seriously. Whether you are a council housing tenant or not, if you are concerned about anti-social behaviour or drug dealing please let us know. We will take action to make Oxford safer for everyone.”

Oxford City Council’s Anti-Social Behaviour Investigation Team, have advised that anyone with concerns or information should contact 01865 249811 or saferoxford@oxford.gov.uk.
