Plans for ‘The Ark’: a £15m flood training centre in Scunthorpe

The government are being urged to fund £15m for a flood training centre in Scunthorpe.

Plans for a training centre for the emergency services have been developed by The University of Hull and Humberside Fire and Rescue. The idea was raised in the House of Commons, and is to be discussed between ministers and both organisations as they urge the government to build it.

‘The Ark’ centre would offer simulated flood training in urban and rural areas.

£2m in funding has already been allocated, but it will cost £15m to construct.

Speaking in parliament Andrew Percy, MP for Brigg and Goole, said: “I urge the secretary of state [George Eustice], given the particular risk that we have in my area, to look very closely at the proposal for a national flood resilience centre in Scunthorpe.

“We need the government to step up and provide funding so that we have a proper national centre.”

George Eustice responded by saying that he would be “more than happy to meet him and representatives from his local authority to discuss their proposal.”

Prof Dan Parsons, director of the Energy and Environment Institute at the University of Hull, has said that “the devastating impact of storms Ciara and Dennis over recent weeks highlights the need for greater understanding and more effective responses and recovery to severe flood events.

At present, much of the UK is still subject to flooding or flood warnings. Areas affected include xxx. Residents have warned that they feel “immediate action is needed.” Many of them are in support of these plans, and also urge the government to fund the £15m flood training centre.
