Lifestyle Awards Turns 30!

30th Annual Lifestyle Awards

Tonight young people from across the force area will be coming together to celebrate as we host our 30th annual Lifestyle Awards at the Bonus Arena in Hull.

Lifestyle is a Humberside Police initiative that challenges young people to get together in teams to complete a project that benefits their community in some way.

First launched in 1989, the project has seen tens of thousands of young people come up with creative ideas and projects. From cleaning up public spaces, to raising awareness of medical conditions, to hosting charity bake sales, fun days, car boots and tombolas.

This year we had a whopping 591 teams enter Lifestyle and between them they have raised almost £54,000 for charity and worked over 13,000 hours during their summer holidays.
Throughout their projects our teams have been busily recording every detail in a logbook which has now been reviewed by our panel of judges ready for tonight’s event, where Chief Constable Lee Freeman and BBC Look North’s Caroline Bilton will be giving out awards for the most innovative and creative projects.

The prizes include days out to Flamingo Land, Tockwith Race Course and Go Ape as well as a week-long adventure holiday to Wales.

They will also be announcing our overall winners in both the junior and senior category who will be winning a holiday abroad.
For the junior winners it will be a trip to Paris, sightseeing across the city and visiting both Paris Zoo and Disneyland Paris.

The overall senior winners will be jetting off to South Africa where they will learn more about the local culture as well as seeing wild animals on safari.

Chief Constable Lee Freeman, who was on this year’s judging panel, said: “I thoroughly enjoyed reading all about the different initiatives that our young people have been doing.

“There were some really exciting projects this year which I can see have already helped communities across our region. It was extremely difficult for us to pick the overall winners as the standard was so high, however there were two teams that really impressed us.

“Tonight’s event should be a great opportunity for us to celebrate all the hard work that the teams have been doing and I am really looking forward to personally saying well done and handing out the awards.

“I am incredibly proud of our Lifestyle initiative which over the last 30 years has helped to inspire tens of thousands of young people to be active members of their community and think about ways to help others.

“Well done to everyone who has taken part this year, and over the past 30 years.”

Malcolm Bennie, Chair of Arco’s Community Panel said: “The endeavour, energy and enthusiasm from the teams that reached the final this year has absolutely blown me away. It was fantastic to hear from the finalists what they have learned and how they have grown throughout their projects. It’s wonderful to see the commitment to their local community.

“I’ve seen a diverse range of projects coming through, and finalists or not, the communities in which we live have benefited greatly and will continue to do so. I cannot thank this year’s participants enough for their summer of activity.”
